McCabe Wonder Goal Sinks Reds

A Shane McCabe wonder goal and a Colin Nixon penalty heaped more pressure on Cliftonville boss Eddie Patterson as his miss-firing Cliftonville side seccumbed 0-2 to Glentoran at Solitude on Monday evening in front of the Sky camera's. Glentoran's opener came against the run of play but McCabe's strike with the outside of his right boot from 22 yards was worth the admission money alone. The game was played in atrocious conditions and on a pitch that in areas resembled a ploughed field, serious remedial work on the Solitude pitch must be a priority for the Reds who's free flowing football is being severely hampered by the conditions under foot.

But they face a tough challenge in the form of last year’s third placed side Cliftonville.

Eddie Patterson’s side have already played competitively this season, exiting the UEFA Cup at the hands of Danish side FC Copenhagen.

They also managed to get half of their league game with champions Linfield finished on Saturday before succumbing to the rain.

Linfield v Cliftonville - Preview
Following last Saturdays false start the new JJB Premiership opens this weekend in what promises to be one of the most open and exciting seasons in Irish League history.
Linfield entertain Cliftonville at Windsor Park in what is the game of the day. Last season Eddie Patterson's team pushed Linfield all the way in the race for the Gibson Cup and Linfield boss David Jeffrey will expect nothing less from their old rivals. Linfield will of course be missing Peter Thompson who has joined Stockport County and how they cope without Pistol Pete may hold the key to their season. Cliftonville have added Rory Hamill in an attempt to push on from the highs of last season and the reds will be out to put an early dent to Linfields title aspirations.
